Crispy Honey BBQ tofu

This crispy on the outside, tender on the inside with sweet and savoury BBQ flavours, this tofu is a perfect protein packed meal.

Ingredients
  • 700 g Extra Firm tofu sliced
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tbsp unsalted plant-based butter
  • 1/2 tsp asafoetida (hing)
  • 1 cup sliced red or yellow bell peppers (optional- if you want to add some veggies)
  • 1 cup sliced cremini mushrooms (optional- if you want to add some veggies)
  • optional: pair it with quinoa or have it in a BBQ tofu sandwich
  • Honey BBQ sauce
  • 125 ml tomato paste
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp liquid aminos
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tbsp honey (I used hot honey for an extra punch) (use a drizzle of maple syrup for a vegan version)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: cilantro chopped for garnish. Extra hot honey to drizzle on top.
Instructions
  1. Heat large skillet on medium. Add oil, butter and asafoetida and let roast for 15 secs. Add tofu slices and let roast on each side until golden and crispy, about 4-5 mins. Note: Tofu should be well cooked and crispy before adding bbq sauce as the sauce will soften them. You may need to cook the tofu in batches, depending on size of your skillet.

  2. In a small bowl add honey BBQ sauce ingredients (except salt and pepper). Once tofu is cooked (if you made it in batches, add all the tofu to the pan on medium heat at this point) pour honey BBQ sauce over top of the tofu in the skillet and add optional peppers and mushrooms and continue to cook on medium, flipping tofu slices often to prevent them from burning and to coat both sides of tofu evenly. For an extra boost of flavour- once the sauce has absorbed in the tofu and started to thicken, add 1-2 tsp plant-based butter to coat the tofu, flipping them often to coat all sides.  Lastly add salt and pepper to taste and garnish with cilantro and a drizzle of hot honey or maple syrup for vegan version
